Twigs and Berries: Summer Art, and Some’re Not

Island at Dusk, Monotype, 22×30, 2025. Was featured in the Colorado Print Educators show at Space Gallery in February ’26

Summer Shows:

Colorado ‘Round the Clock, Kirkland Denver Art Museum, Sept 4, Opens 5 PM: This is actually the second part of a show that began during MoPrint, back in February. I’ll have one print in it, an etching called November Dusk, so if the dog days are in full effect by then, perhaps I can provide a cooling vision. Want a preview? I’ll have other copies of the edition at the Summer Art Market ( see below), available at 10% off.

Summer Art Market, 2nd Avenue, off Grant, Saturday/Sunday Augusst 23-24, 10-5 PM. Offers new work, as well as reprise of recent shows, such as my pieces in the Colorado Educators Show at Space Gallery and the Impressions show at NKollective during MoPrint in March.

I’m in a new spot this year, at the intersection of 2nd and Grant St, Booth #93. There is a map online when you get your tickets, which are $7 advance, and $10 at the gate. As always, I’m offering a ticket refund with every sale. Tickets are available here.

In recent years, after much travel for family and fun, the idea of ‘Home’ has been on my mind. Home is an idea that never leaves our thoughts, no matter where and how far we go. Much of this work can be seen on JoeHigginsMonotypes.com.

Artmore, NKollectiv, S. Broadway near Englewood Parkway in Englewood, January 30-March 7, opens January 30 , time TBD. This is an invitational organized through the Artma (Morgan Adams Foundation), to whom I have often donated art (and enjoyed their wonderful parties) in support of children’s cancer research. I’ll have an undetermined amount of pieces in it, probably about 6-7, and will see about including some oldies but goodies if they like. More details soon, and on JoeHigginsMonotypes.com.

Classes: My Summer Classes are mostly filled, but a recent feature of end of Summer at the Art Students League of Denver has been their Sampler series. These take two forms: actual limited enrollment short ( 2-3 hrs) 1-day classes in monotype basics; and more festive and simplified drop-in sampler, with other instructors August 26-28, at which I will be there for a family oriented one, as well as another one simply for teens. Register at ASLD.org/Classes.

I don’t know how much longer I will be offering classes. My retirement is not imminent, but I have tended to offer fewer as travel and reading and relaxation have increased, and the question of when to step aside and let someone younger take over does cross my mind. I’ll give a warning if I do set a date, and probably continue to fill in indefinitely. I may never stop going in to studio, meaning that I’ll probably keep monitoring Open Studio for quite a while. I enjoy seeing and chatting with other artists and working on new work.

Dark Tree, Monotype, 12×9″. Layering of various stencil forms led to an organic, Art Brut image.

Web Store: JoeHigginsMonotypes.Squaresite is up and running- just click “web store” on the menu bar above, though it’s my soft launch and it’s very stubby right now, with some muddy images that need cleaning up and only alimited amount of items uploaded. I have many items to add in the coming weeks, but the SAM prep does limit how many. Summer Art Market will remain the largest selection for a while. You can preview SAM work online, then pick up at SAM, so there’s a little perk for regular Web visitors. Shipping is also available. And here’s another secret: When I do a hard launch, probably late September or early October, there will be a site wide introductory discount. The catch being, stuff sold at SAM will be gone, of course. It’s also true that I’m not uploading any larger work for a while, so SAM and NKollectiv will remain your best bets to see that.

Previews of either show can be arranged, as always. If you’re the type who likes sipping coffee ( or wine) and sifting through flat files, all you need do is contact me through JoeHigginsMonotypes.com, and we’ll set up a date.

And Some’re People and Memories:

Studios: For printmakers, I continue to monitor the print studio at Art Students League of Denver, most Sundays. If you’re a member, you go online under “Open Studios” in their class menu, and pay a nominal fee. It’s an informal setting, but I don’t mind answering questions and there are often other artists there you can meet. Printmaking, owing to the basic need to gather around a press, can be a very social medium. With the very repressive regime in Washington, I do love the idea of gathering in groups and making art. How the Ku Klux Klowns must hate that!

Book: I sure do love my Shoegaze and Dream Pop and alt/goth country when I’m working in the studio. But of course, the very first musical passion, and certainly the creative and cultural linchpin of my life has and always will be The Beatles. A friend gave me their Anthology book, a monster volume packed with photos, but more importantly, an oral history of their lives by the Beatles themselves.

The thing is awkwardly sized, too heavy to read on the bus, for sure, but great for resting on your knees in bed after a busy day. To that end, it doesn’t require a lot of spare bandwidth, as their story is well known to most of us, but that is in no way to say it’s not substantive and compelling. I’ve read a lot of bios and musical analysis on the Fabs, but who will ever know them as well as each other? And by cross referencing the various comments of Paul, George, Ringo and John ( whose posthumous contributions are very cleverly edited in ) one gets a real sense of who these people were, and what they meant to each other, not to mention a changing world.

I have a couple of other long book posts in the can, though no real time to spruce them up for publication yet, that’ll come in September. One is on sex in comics (woo!) and another is on the mercurial Paul Pope, who is finally collecting ( and apparently, finishing,) his amazing 90s Sci Fi ground breaker, THB. I also read a Carol Tyler memoir, new Katie Skelly, and a bunch of zines and minis. My LA trip and the World Cup put a halt on everything except the Beatles, but I’ll be back with a reading list from the couch next month.
